The camping almanac

We’re here to save camping in America.

So we set out to build the best camping site in America to do it. Every federal campground and every campsite, one page each, every fact sourced to the agency that said it, the walk-up ones first, and not a dollar taken from your booking. Free forever.

The CAMPANAC Map.

Every federal campground in America, live.

Zoom to your ground. Tap a dot for what’s open this weekend, what it costs, and who runs it. Then book the exact site.

Open tonight, no reservation.

All 1,623 walk-up campgrounds

355 first-come campgrounds are open tonight, and not one of them can sell out.

Open means the agency has posted no closure and the season is on. Picks change daily.

We want to build the best camping site in America. And the one doing the most good.

Those aren’t two goals. They’re one. A site that tells you the truth about every campground is the only kind that can fight for them.

How we’re building the best

  1. Every federal campground, every campsite, one page each.

2,201 of them recreation.gov doesn’t list at all.

  2. Every fact says where it came from and the day we read it.

Nothing on the page without a source.

  3. The map: the whole country, live, down to the exact site you’ll sleep on.

  4. The Watch: we check the calendar every hour and email you when a night opens, a gate reopens, or a season starts.

  5. The walk-up ones first.

1,623 campgrounds still take you at the gate.

  6. Free forever.

We take nothing from your booking. The link goes straight to the government.

How we’re doing the most good

  1. We keep a public ledger of every closed campground and the agency’s own sentence about it.

    See what’s being lost

  2. You can report a locked gate or a derelict loop, and we ask the agency and your member of Congress about it on the record.

    The tip line

  3. We say what we believe and we’re fighting for it: a walk-up share at every campground, an end to ghost camping, no junk fees, no private cut of your booking.

    Read the six

  4. We report. Every fight over these places gets written up, in print, with names.

    Read it on Substack

We’re Will and Jim Pattiz, the Pattiz brothers, co-founders of More Than Just Parks. We’ve spent a decade filming these places for the agencies that manage them, and we built CAMPANAC to save camping, the kind where you leave on a Friday with no plan and still find a site. We make nothing when you book. The link goes straight to the government.
