Tree cover

Campgrounds that burned.

Every campground on this page lost or gained twenty points or more of tree cover between the 2021 and 2024 NLCD Tree Canopy Cover products, and a wildfire perimeter in NIFC’s interagency record contains its coordinate or one of its campsites, or runs within 300 m of one. The reading is two 30 m satellite cells three years apart, which measures the canopy over the place. Whether you can camp there this week is on the campground’s own page, with its season and its status, read from the agency.

26 campgrounds in 21 fires

Of the 356 campgrounds whose figure moved twenty points or more, these are the ones a wildfire perimeter stands behind. Each fire carries the year it was discovered and the acreage measured from its published polygon, and each campground carries the two readings, the earlier one struck through, with where its point and its campsites fell against the line.

Three that rose

a 0 in the 2021 product, inside a later perimeter

A cell that read 0 in the 2021 product and a figure in 2024, at a coordinate a perimeter drawn after 2021 contains or nearly touches. The readings are printed as the products gave them and the perimeter is printed because it is there. A 0 in the earlier cell is the product’s reading of that cell in that year, and the pair says that much and no more.

How this was tested

The readings

Every located campground and campsite carries one 30 m cell of NLCD Tree Canopy Cover for 2021 and one for 2024, read in the same cell of the same grid. The figure a campground page prints is the median over its campsites where three or more carry a reading, and otherwise the cell at its own coordinate. A campground is in the stamped population when that figure moved twenty points or more between the two years.

The test

The campground’s point and every located campsite were tested against every wildfire perimeter discovered 2021 to 2024 in NIFC’s WFIGS interagency record, and the nearest decides. A perimeter that contains a point or a site, or runs within 300 m of one, puts the campground on this page. A figure that flipped to 0 within 30 m of water is the product’s water mask and is counted in the head as such. Every other move is recorded as unexplained, and this page says nothing about it.
