The area is part of the mineral belt that extends into Leadville. Many of the 4-wheel drive roads were created by miners over 100 years ago which are now popular for four-wheel driving in the Summer and Fall months. The campground is near the alpine Tunnel historic site.

One of 1,623 federal campgrounds where the site still goes to whoever pulls in first, and a night costs $14 with nothing added. Get there before noon on a summer weekend.
