The place

the agency’s own description · what’s there

In the agency’s own words

Located 50 minutes northeast of Chiloquin, OR, Head of the River Campground is a rustic forest camp situated at the headwaters of the Williamson River at the base of the hillside. The pure, spring-fed river flows by the rustic campground. There are five campsites and one vaulted toiled. Amenities include picnic tables and camp fire rings. June and July are heavy mosquito months, so bring bug spray. There are no official trails for hiking at Head of the River, but you can walk down to the bank. Fly-fishing opportunities abound nearby; check the State of Oregon fishing regulations for precise locations. Head of the River is a popular campground for hunters in the fall. There is no potable water. Visitors need to bring an adequate supply of water.

Nothing to book, just show up

One of 1,623 federal campgrounds where the site still goes to whoever pulls in first, and it costs nothing at all. Get there before noon on a summer weekend.

recreation.gov publishes no availability for a campground you can’t reserve, so there’s no thirty-night reading to draw here. The season bar above is what the agency does publish.

Derived by CAMPANAC: the agency’s own record says there’s no camping fee, and no booking fee, because this campground takes no reservations. A weekend here means Friday and Saturday night. Optional charges (an extra vehicle, a second tent, a dump-station fee) are listed separately and aren’t in this total.

How we know

every fact on this page, and where it came from
Right now: U.S. Forest Service’s own recreation database flags it not open and publishes no reason and no date. That’s a flag, not a notice.
Cell signal: the Forest Service’s own campground description, read as text by CAMPANAC. None of this is a measurement. It’s what the land manager published about the place, and phones, carriers and weather all disagree with each other; treat it as a warning, not a promise.
Nearest place of any size: Sprague River, OR, 19 mi NNE (a census designated place). Straight line.
